Water Sports

Water Sports

Make the most of our prime beachside location and enjoy some of our exciting water activities.

Water sports have fantastic health benefits. They can give you an adrenaline rush, improve your mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and get you outside breathing the fresh ocean air. The fluidity of water is gentle and naturally soothing, providing a form of exercise that is easy on the body.

We provide a free shuttle bus for guests for any activities that do not take place at Sargood on Collaroy. If space allows, family members may be able to come along on our shuttle bus, however, guests with a SCI will be given priority.

WEEKLY ACTIVITIES

Surfing, body surfing or ocean swimming

Get back in the surf and experience the thrill of riding the waves using our Wavejet Surfboard. We will teach you how to use the Wavejet surfboard and other adaptive equipment. Our goal is to get you surfing as independently as possible without compromising your safety.

Along with the Wavejet Surfboard, we also use soft top surfboards and beach access wheelchairs (Hippocampe, Lasher Sport, Beach Bomber, MobiChair).

If surfing is not for you, let us support you into the surf for a swim or body surf. We have a range of pool chairs and floatation devices to assist you.

Note: this activity is available to all ability levels however we require that you first attend our Intro to Surf Safety/Beach Access Session.

Fishing

Explore the best local fishing spots with our guide then enjoy an afternoon of fishing at one of our local accessible fishing platforms.  This is a great activity to enjoy with family or friends.

Or use our X8 power chairs or a manual beach access chair and cast off from the sand. If the conditions are right, we can often fish from the beach right in front of Sargood.

Expect to catch anything from whiting, bream, flathead, blackfish, snapper, tailor, salmon, mulloway or if you’re really lucky, you might even hook a shark!

We use electric fishing reels, strong arm supports and rod holders.

Sailing

Experience freedom on the water, regardless of your ability. We will head down to Manly Yacht club to participate in the Sailability program. Sailability offers support, assistance and equipment to assist people of all abilities to have a go at sailing. Family and carers are welcome to join us however participation will be dependent on numbers.

Beach Activities

Our location right on the headland at Collaroy means you can experience easy beach access. Use our beach wheelchairs to reach the golden sands of Collaroy beach and take a dip in the nearby accessible beach reserve or rock pools using our special pool chairs and floatation devices.

Snorkelling

We will take you to Shelly Beach, where you can dive into the ocean and snorkel away with our specialist adaptive snorkelling gear. Loads of little fish will typically come to visit and you may even encounter the famous Blue Groper.

Kayaking

Join us for a kayaking trip on the picturesque Narrabeen Lakes. To actively participate, you will require motor arm function. Higher level quadriplegics can be supported in tandem kayaks, however some additional planning around seating and support is required.

If you are feeling confident, you may even like to bring along a fishing rod and try your luck!

We use Active Hands gripping aids, foam seating support, single and double kayaks and hoists (for transfers).
