April 2018: Working & Studying with SCI Workshop at Sargood on Collaroy

In-Voc will be running an intensive 3 day career development workshop for participants (working or not working) at Sargood on Collaroy.

This is an exciting opportunity to:

  • Meet Dr Jim Bright: career development expert, author, researcher and career columnist for Sydney Morning Herald.   Engage in entertaining discussion about the development, complexity and chaos of careers in the modern world of work
  • Participate in  “Career Collage”, a career exploration art therapy activity to help you discover your unique qualities and express any unknown, forgotten or unacknowledged future goals
  • Learn how to enhance your existing skills as well as develop new skills and knowledge through study or work experience and volunteering
  • A TAFE consultant will be available to chat about what supports are available for people with a physical disability while studying at a TAFE location or via correspondence from home
  • Learn how to identify and recognise your transferable skills through a fun, interactive activity
  • Explore the possibilities through the use of various assistive technology equipment making study or work that much more accessible!
  • Understand job seeking online, respond to opportunities, submit resumes and learn how to make the most of the internet for your career
  • Chat about job seeking and what you may or may not need to disclose about your disability depending on job criteria and location
  • A representative from a national Disability Employment Service (DES) will be hand should you wish to have support finding or maintaining employment. They can talk about whether you are eligible, how to enrol and what supports are available to you.
  • Be inspired by people currently living with SCI who are in the workforce in many different roles
  • Make the most of the opportunity to have a one on one vocational counselling session with an In-Voc consultant to hone in on what you’d really like to achieve whether it is starting a new profession, returning to your existing employment or returning to study

One on one sessions will be offered both during the afternoons of the 3 day event at Sargood (all participants) and during follow on meetings in the community (for Sydney based clients).

Services could include the following and will be tailored to each individual:

  • Vocational testing and counselling
  • Development of a plan outlining a return to study or work goal and steps
  • Resume development or review
  • Interview preparation
  • Disclosure of disability education
  • Work experience placement with a local business
  • Coordination of contact with a peer working in a related field
